Police have quashed a sophisticated money laundering scheme that operated through casinos in Niagara and elsewhere in Ontario.
The Hamilton-Niagara RCMP branch announced Tuesday that five people face charges following a lengthy investigation into money laundering and drug trafficking. About $24 million in cannabis and more than $1 million in cash was seized as a result of the investigation.
The investigation began in 2017 after the RCMP received information about a potential money laundering scheme operating through casinos in Niagara and the Greater Toronto Area.
Police said more than $3 million was laundered from the illegal sale of cannabis. Search warrants were recently executed on five residences and six large-scale marijuana-growing operations.
