A Pennsylvania House committee on Tuesday heard testimony on legislation that would ban smoking in all workplaces in the state, including casinos, bars and private clubs.

Casino workers and public health advocates spoke in favor of House Bill 1657 during a hearing before the House Health Committee.

Rep. Dan Frankel, D-23, introduced the bill and said it would close the remaining loopholes in the Clean Indoor Air Act that expose casino workers to secondhand smoke from cigarettes, cigars and e-cigarettes.

According to the Pennsylvania Department of Health, secondhand smoke can cause health problems like heart disease, stroke and lung cancer.

Frankel said casino workers shouldn’t have to choose between their health and their paycheck.
