About 900 workers from the Casino Ajax and Pickering Casino Resort are on strike after a tentative agreement was struck down by the workers’ union earlier this week.
The strike action started on Friday. Outside the Pickering casino, picketers gathered in an intersection, and chants of “equal work, equal pay!” rang out from the crowd.
Greg Weaver, president of Unifor Local 1090, which represents casino workers like housekeepers, cashiers and security guards, said the workers at the Pickering and Ajax casino locations are getting paid less than employees at other casinos in the GTA under the same management for doing the same jobs.
