Despite a controversial past related to gambling on baseball, Pete Rose will place the first legal sports wager at Hard Rock Casino Cincinnati, the casino confirmed to Forbes Betting.

Rose’s scheduled appearance was first reported by wlwt.com.

The Hard Rock Sportsbook will officially open on Sunday, Jan. 1, 2023, at 12:01 a.m. when sports betting becomes legal in Ohio. Sports betting legislation was signed into law by Gov. Mike DeWine in late 2021.

The retail betting site at the Cincinnati casino will be one of many in the state, with major sportsbooks also planned for casinos in Cleveland, Columbus and Toledo.

Online sportsbooks are also permitted under state law. Online sportsbooks licensed by Ohio are expected to launch on Jan. 1, 2023.
