Ohio is levying more than $1 million in fines against at least five sports books, just days after they began taking bets in the state.

The director of an agency set up to help problem gamblers knew the fight for market share would be fierce, but even he was surprised the state acted so quickly.

“In the history of the Casino Control Commission, these are record-setting numbers,” said Derek Longmire with the Problem Gambling Network of Ohio.

The problem gambling hotline number is supposed to run with all ads for sports gambling. In some cases it did not, which is why some companies are getting fined.
