A proposal to bring a tribal casino to Grand Forks appears to be dead, with no news or updates since the plan was quashed by the state Legislature earlier this year.

Grand Forks Mayor Brandon Bochenski said there is always a possibility things can reverse course in the coming years, it likely isn’t going to happen anytime soon.

“I think until the state Legislature has a change of heart,” the plan will remain dormant, Bochenski said.

The proposal to bring a casino gained momentum late in 2024 and earlier this year after it was announced the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa purchased more than 100 acres along Grand Forks’ southern limit. The City Council gave preliminary approval to the plan, essentially encouraging the tribe to move forward and a series of steps that were needed to be completed before ground could be broken.
