Last year, North Carolina Senate President Phil Berger floated the addition of a quartet of non-tribal casinos to the state’s three tribal properties and the notion fell flat. There was additional discussion concerning legalizing video gambling machines, and that too failed to gain traction.
Berger isn’t finished, though, and said he might revisit both ideas during the legislature’s short April session.
It is possible he could get legislation to the desk of Gov. Roy Cooper, though it’s unclear whether the governor would sign a bill. Last year, Cooper chided plans that tied gambling expansion to Medicaid.
This year, however, is an election year in North Carolina, and Cooper won’t be on the ballot due to term limits. As such, the Charlotte News & Observer asked the potential gubernatorial candidates for their positions on expanding gambling in the state.
