Native American tribes that operate casinos in New Mexico are raising concerns about a proposal to shift one of the state’s five racino licenses from Farmington to an area near the Texas border, fearing the move could impact their gaming revenues.
A proposal before the New Mexico Racing Commission would relocate the horse racing and casino license for SunRay Park & Casino in San Juan County to a Curry County site near Clovis. If approved, the move would mark a major loss for Farmington and shake up the gambling industry in the state.
Ismael “Izzy” Trejo, executive director of the New Mexico Racing Commission, said the three-member panel will hear presentations from parties both in support of and in opposition to the SunRay Park move and take public comment during a meeting Friday in Albuquerque.
