Gov. Mikie Sherrill says Atlantic City’s economy needs to be strengthened to fight off the threat posed by three new casinos to be built soon in New York City, adding the state and city need to agree soon on how best to do it.

The city’s casino industry eagerly embraced that call, proposing a series of measures to fight blight, crack down on crime on the Boardwalk and in the Tourism District, upgrade infrastructure, and beautify streets and public spaces.

In an interview last week with The Press of Atlantic City, Sherrill did not take a position on whether casino gambling should be allowed anywhere in the state other than Atlantic City amid rumblings of a renewed push for casinos at the Meadowlands and Monmouth Park racetracks.
