It was about as basic a violation of gambling law as could possibly be: The house unilaterally changed people’s bets from winners to losers.

That act by an online gambling tech company in New Jersey, which occurred on a 2022 Ultimate Fighting Championship match, resulted in one of two hefty fines recently handed out by the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement, both going to companies that are no longer doing business in the state.

In an action made public last week, the division fined SBOpco LLC, formerly doing business as Superbook, $20,000 for unilaterally changing five bets on a Feb. 12, 2022, UFC match between William Knight and Maxim Grishin.
