Heather Maurer has resigned as executive director of the National Council on Problem Gambling, less than a year after taking the role and amid ongoing controversy over the organization’s partnership with prediction market platform Kalshi.
Maurer’s resignation was confirmed on September 28. She will remain in the role until October 16 to assist with the transition, with the NCPG beginning a search for her replacement.
Her departure follows criticism of the NCPG over a US$2 million, two-year investment from Kalshi announced in May. The partnership made Kalshi the first member of the NCPG’s new Financial Services & Trading category and was intended to support an initiative focused on trader health and safety.
