The NBA has banned sportsbook operators from using the term “risk free” in advertising that appears on league and team-controlled platforms and will encourage broadcasters to do the same.
The decision follows a trend that began in July, when FanDuel became the first sportsbook to remove the phrase from its advertising, replacing it with “sweat free” in response to concerns raised by responsible gambling advocates. Since then, regulators in Ohio and Massachusetts have banned the term.
BetMGM, DraftKings and Caesars are among those who more recently dropped “risk free” from their creative, referring instead to “bet credits” and “bonus bets” for new customers who don’t win, though the phrase survives in some previously posted ads.
