Proposed legislation that would require casinos to collect unpaid child support from gambling winnings is accelerating in Mississippi.
Both the House and Senate passed House Bill 520/Senate Bill 2369 on Tuesday. The bills would require casinos to cross-reference large wins against a state database maintained by the Department of Human Services.
If a person wins more than $2,000 and owes back child support, the casino would pay what they owe first, then give them the leftover winnings.
“If someone owes past due child support, we’re glad to make that database available to get that money to support the children,” said State Sen. Walter Michel, a Republican representing District 25.
