The Town of West Springfield has received a $132,900 grant from the Massachusetts Gaming Commission’s Community Mitigation Fund.
The Community Mitigation Fund was established under the state’s Expanded Gaming Act to assist municipalities in offsetting municipal costs tied to casino construction and operations. West Springfield’s grant will help salary-related expenses for eight firefighter/EMS personnel, four police patrol officers, and three dispatchers for the funding period running from July 1, 2026, through June 30, 2027.
In its grant application, the town noted that casino operations and related hospitality businesses generate added demands on emergency services. Local officials highlighted increased traffic congestion, crashes, and vehicle conflicts involving bicycles and pedestrians, along with law enforcement pressures linked to criminal activity.
