Incarceration, fines and other penalties hang over the head of former chairman of the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe Cedric Cromwell as he agreed in June to plead guilty to tax fraud. Cromwell now faces sentencing for tax fraud and extortion charges in U.S. District Court in Boston.
In the plea agreement acknowledgement signed by Cromwell on June 25, he intends to change his plea to guilty on tax fraud charges, known as counts 11 to 14 of a superseding indictment.
Cromwell first pleaded not guilty in November 2020 to bribery and extortion charges related to the tribe’s plans to build its First Light Resort and Casino in Taunton. In the superseding indictment in 2021, tax fraud charges were added, and Cromwell pleaded not guilty to those additional charges on April 1, 2021, court records show.
