Employees at Chances Casino in Abbotsford are on strike and the establishment has been closed due to a labour dispute since Sunday (July 28).

The current contract between the two sides expired in February and recent talks led to an impasse.

A notice from the United Steelworkers Local 2009 states that the primary issue is wages.

According to the notice, a typical employee at the casino is classified as a slot attendant and per the last contract they earned $16.34 [US$11.80] per hour. However, since the increase in the minimum wage in June that was bumped up to $17.70 [US$12.78] employees have earned 30 cents per hour more than minimum wage.
