It involved pro football players in a shampoo commercial, but the catchphrase could also apply to Jim Allen: “Never not working.”

A childhood playing basketball and football with friends in Northfield took an unexpected turn at age 12 when his parents started experiencing “significant financial challenges,” prompting him to create a business walking the neighborhood’s dogs.

Fifty-two years later, Allen is still working, only now he is one of the most powerful and influential gambling executives in the world at the head of the global Hard Rock empire.

Allen, 64, who sold subscriptions to this very newspaper in Cumberland and Cape May counties as a teen in the 1970s, is chairman of Hard Rock International and CEO of Seminole Gaming.
