It’s been more than five months since Freehold Raceway – a track with a 170-year history – last hosted a harness racing program.

There’s been a little official word but plenty of rumors on what will happen next at the site. Here’s what we know.

Why did Freehold Raceway close?

Freehold Raceway was the third New Jersey horse racing track to cease operations since 2001 (Garden State Park and Atlantic City Race Course also closed). An official with owner FR Park Racing LLC said business had fallen off at the 57-acre Freehold site: “The operations of the racetrack cannot continue under existing conditions, and we do not see a plausible way forward.”
