As professional sports leagues and teams begin to embrace sports gambling more and more, helping fuel its pervasiveness, the NBA is the most recent major professional sports league to find itself in the spotlight.

The league is currently investigating Toronto Raptors center Jontay Porter for his possible role in suspicious gambling on prop bets on him on two nights — both wagering on the under on his personal stats. ESPN was the first to report the news. Porter could face a lifetime ban from the league if the betting allegations are true.

“It’s a cardinal sin of what he’s accused of in the NBA,” commissioner Adam Silver said Wednesday at the league’s annual Board of Governors meetings.
