The operator of Mecca Bingo and Grosvenor Casinos has begun a search for a new chief executive after John O’Reilly announced he was stepping down from the top job after seven and a half years.

The betting industry veteran, 65, who is widely credited with spearheading a turnaround at Rank Group since becoming chief executive in 2018, will retire at the end of January but will continue to support the business until the end of the current financial year.

Richard Harris, the group’s chief financial officer since May 2022, will become interim chief executive from January 30 until a permanent successor is appointed.

“It has been a privilege to lead Rank for the past seven and a half years and I am proud of all that we have accomplished in that time,” O’Reilly said.
