Gov. Mikie Sherrill says the city is “getting closer” to being able to stand on its own financially without high levels of support from the state and the casino industry.
She sees her task as finding “a balance” between making sure the city has what it needs to function effectively while also making sure there is enough money to reinvest in the city’s economic development.
The issue of whether Atlantic City still needs intense state oversight and financial help is being considered anew, with the city’s finances having stabilized and about half its debt having been paid off, with a big assist from the state.
