Gov. Josh Green said Monday he will not veto a bill to allow online sports betting in Hawaii if it comes out of the state Legislature with proper safeguards. Meanwhile, the state House debated a proposal to study casino gaming which is tied to the challenge of redeveloping the Aloha Stadium district.

Advocates of casinos, including state Rep. Daniel Holt, argued there is no industry with as much potential for rapid economic development.

“It’s possible to increase our job count by 6,000 jobs and a benefit of $250 million plus to our economy,” Holt argued.

Progressive Democrats like Kim Coco Iwamoto joined many Republicans in opposing any gambling measures.
