Members of the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina will decide on allowing gambling on tribal lands. Tribal council members on Thursday passed a resolution to put to a vote an amendment to the tribal constitution.
The Lumbees late last year won federal recognition, and the council’s resolution noted that tribal gaming is allowed under federal law. The “Tribal Council finds it is in the best interest and welfare of the Tribe to authorize gaming activities on Tribal lands,” the resolution states.
Approval will require a majority vote. A date has not been set.
Most Lumbees live in Cumberland, Hoke, Robeson and Scotland counties.
