A controversial bill filed in the Florida Legislature aims to separate live horse racing from gambling operations in a move that could impact the equine industry in the state. Florida House Bill 881 was filed by state Rep. Adam Anderson, a Republican from Pinellas County, on Tuesday to “decouple” live racing from gambling operations at Florida’s last two racetracks.
Opponents argue that decoupling would severely harm the state’s horse industry, which is centered in Marion County.
The bill is similar to one that was narrowly defeated in the last legislative session.
Decoupling supporters have also filed suit to declare the state coupling requirement unconstitutional.
