Florida’s crackdown on illegal gaming arcades in Lee and Collier counties is now colliding with a new argument from customers and advocates: Regulate small arcades instead of shutting them down.
The debate is drawing attention because backers point to Illinois as a state that licenses and taxes similar video gaming terminals, while Florida officials warn illegal operations can be tied to broader criminal activity and offer no consumer protections.
A WINK report said a June multi-agency enforcement action known as Operation Sunset Stakes resulted in 11 arrests, the seizure of 479 illegal gambling machines, and the confiscation of nearly $294,000 in cash. Customers of the Silver Palm Arcade in Collier County said the closure erased a social gathering place for many retirees.
