In the wake of the fatal shooting at the Kickapoo Lucky Eagle Casino on Sept. 27, Maverick County’s district attorney said he expected his office to handle the case against the man accused of killing two people at the casino.

It had initially been unclear who agency would prosecute the case. The casino is on the Kickapoo Traditional Tribe of Texas’ reservation, and the law can be complex when a felony is committed on tribal land, where tribal, state and federal courts can all have jurisdiction, according to legal experts.

Roberto Serna, district attorney for the 293rd and 365th district courts, told the Eagle Pass News Leader that his office would prosecute the case.
