Gov. Mike DeWine was right the first time when, in July 2025, after two Guardians pitchers were suspended for suspected gambling infractions, he called on the Ohio Casino Control Commission “to remove prop bets from the list of legal bets that can be placed under Ohio’s contractual rules for operators.”

Prop bets are a particularly insidious yet heavily promoted form of gambling that hinges not on who wins but rather on specific aspects of the competition itself — such as, say, a single pitch, or other particular actions by a given athlete during a competition.

The dangers to the integrity of sports are obvious.
