Should sports betting be allowed in California, and if so, how and where? That is the sticky question facing Golden State voters Nov. 8. The two dueling propositions on the ballot — 26 and 27 — are creating a maelstrom of confusion as voters are bombarded with advertising, a good deal of it disingenuous at best and deceptive at worst.
How did we get here?
Outside of cardrooms and racetracks, Native American tribes essentially have a monopoly on wagering in the Golden State. This arrangement has brought prosperity to many tribes, including some here in the Coachella Valley.
In 2018, the U.S. Supreme Court let states legalize sports betting.
