A proposed new rule that sought to prohibit recording of a gaming table, device or machine in all Deadwood casinos has been put on hold.

The South Dakota Gaming Commission during a rules hearing on Tuesday generally agreed with its staff’s point that players could misuse recordings to their potential advantage.

But commission chair Harry Christianson of Rapid City said the ban as proposed would go too far.

For example, people would be prohibited from making recordings of themselves if gambling activity was in the background.

“In my eyes, this rule is too broad,” said Christianson, an attorney and a past owner of Deadwood gambling property.
