A First Nation on Vancouver Island is celebrating new beginnings with the full ownership and operations of a casino in its traditional territory.
Chances Cowichan opened in March 2007 as a long-term joint venture between Cowichan Tribes’ Khowutzun Gaming Corporation and Duncan Dabber Bingo Society (DDBS).
After originally providing the land and building funds, the First Nation has now assumed sole operation of the casino, located in Duncan, B.C., near the Cowichan River Silver Bridge.
Cindy Daniels, chief of Cowichan Tribes, said in a statement Friday that the changes in business structure “will support greater economic self-determination” for the First Nation.
