Casino slot-machine revenues were way up in January compared to the same month last year.

Mohegan Sun reported Wednesday it “won,” or kept, $40.5 million in slots revenue after paying out prizes, a 23.2% increase over the $32.8 million in kept in January 2022. Foxwoods Resort Casino’s win of $28 million was up 16.9% over the $24 million it kept a year ago.

To some degree, the robust year-over-year increases reflect COVID-19’s impact on casino traffic in January 2022, Jeff Hamilton, Mohegan Sun’s president and general manager, said. At that time, the disease’s omicron variant fueled a surge in the number of COVID-19 cases.

“There was some lasting COVID impacts during January of 2022, as well as a significant snowstorm late in January that fell on the weekend of Mohegan Sun’s 18th annual Sun Wine & Food Fest,” Hamilton said.
