With just 10 days left in the Alabama legislative session, the future of lottery and gambling in the state remains up in the air.

State lawmakers are weighing two different approaches: a comprehensive gambling expansion and a simpler, lottery-only plan.

In the Senate, Senator Merika Coleman has introduced a wide-ranging gambling bill that would allow Alabama voters to decide whether to legalize a state lottery, in-person casino gaming, and sports betting. Her proposal would set up a framework to regulate casinos and sports wagering, and it would require a constitutional amendment—meaning voters would have the final say at the ballot box.
