Chile’s government has proposed a 22% tax on online gambling revenue while allowing operators to maintain existing marketing contracts for up to a year, despite plans to introduce a total ban on betting advertising.
The measures were announced in a senate bulletin, which brings together proposed amendments to the country’s online gambling legislation, including 172 submitted by President José Antonio Kast’s government on 26 October.
Under the proposals, operators that secure a temporary licence would be allowed to continue advertising contracts they had signed before the law’s publication, but for no longer than one year.
There would also be restrictions placed on any advertising during this period. Television and radio adverts would only be allowed between 10pm and 6am, while all advertising would need to carry warnings about gambling addiction.
