Provinces in Canada can’t agree on how to split the money from online gambling. Audits showed revenue came in way higher than forecasts, and now governments are arguing about what to do with it all. Ontario opened its market to private gambling companies in 2022. Alberta and British Columbia watched what happened there, and both are reconsidering how they run things.
Online gambling brought in $4.8 billion across Canada in 2023, according to the Canadian Gaming Association and KPMG. That number surprised officials who had predicted much less two years before. The actual total came in 40 percent above their forecasts. Audits conducted since 2022 have shown that the pattern repeated itself in multiple provinces.
