The Holt government says it is “exploring options” to regulate private online gambling operators.
It’s potentially a major move that would represent a significant step change away from the monopoly held by Atlantic Lotto. But it comes as the province and the Crown corporation have acknowledged it is losing millions in revenue to a rapidly shifting online gambling space.
The digital gambling market in Atlantic Canada operates under a strictly controlled publicly owned model managed by the Atlantic Lottery Corporation.
That’s unlike Ontario and Alberta, which have now opened their jurisdictions to private operators and licensed independent online gambling sites.
