A raft of rule changes has been put forward for public consultation by the Bulgarian government, including severe marketing restrictions and significant tax hikes. One of the proposed measures amounts to a total ban on gambling advertising in the country.
The policy is being framed and justified as a matter of consumer protection, with a particular emphasis on shielding children and young people from aggressive advertising.
Other amendments proposed for the Bulgarian gambling act include stricter controls around financial reporting in aid of improving anti-money laundering and tax evasion processes.
Bulgarian Prime Minister Rumen Radev has said the goal of the changes is to achieve “greater transparency, fairer taxation, and above all, curbing gambling addiction.”
