More than 3,500 workers have been dismissed or had their contracts terminated in Brazil’s betting sector as a result of Provisional Measure 1,394, according to ANJL, which projects 5,600 cuts within 90 days.
The measure, signed by President Lula, brought a sudden and shocking end to a regulated market that began operating on 1 January 2025 under Law 14,790, which was initially signed in December 2023.
A new survey by the National Association of Games and Lotteries (ANJL), released on 7 October, covers dismissals and contract terminations since 25 September, when the government announced the measure and licensed gambling was effectively shut off overnight.
The data was supplied by multiple gambling companies, many of which went offline on 6 October.
