Bill to ban ‘gray machines’ in Kentucky clears House committee

A bill to ban so-called “gray machines” in Kentucky passed through a state House committee late Thursday, once again splitting Republican legislators on the heavily lobbied issue.

House Bill 594 of Rep. Killian Timoney, R-Lexington, would ban the video games with cash payouts that have proliferated in gas stations, bars and clubs across Kentucky over the past few years, with opponents saying they’re an illegal expansion of gambling that is unregulated.

Opponents of the legislation say a ban on what they call “skill games” would hurt small businesses that rely on the income they’ve provided, claiming it is pushed by the horse racing industry to kill competition.
