Online gambling has grown into a $100 billion industry in the United States.
But its rapid growth has coincided with the rise of an illegal online gambling market, an industry worth nearly four times as much at around $400 billion according to the American Gaming Association.
That money comes from bettors who may not be on the lookout for the warning signs of a scam.
“You’re dealing with people who are trying to make a buck,” said Julie Wheeler, president of the Better Business Bureau serving Western Virginia. “They’re trying to prosper financially, so maybe they’re not as discerning as they should be.”
