The Austrian Association for Betting and Gambling (OVWG) has called for an urgent reform of Austria’s gambling laws.

In a landmark decision, the Supreme Court (OGH) recently ruled that previously unlicensed online gambling operators can reclaim pre-regulation winnings paid out to Austrian players. The ruling introduced a new dimension to the numerous player reimbursement cases currently occupying courts in Germany, Austria, and the Netherlands.

While most of these cases focus on players recovering losses, the court’s decision also allows operators to reclaim winnings previously paid out.

“This ruling reveals clear weaknesses in the current gambling law and shows how urgently Austria needs a comprehensive reform of gambling regulation,” said OVWG president Claus Retschitzegger.
