A Democratic state senator has introduced a bill that would extend the state takeover of Atlantic City for five more years — half as long as what is called for under a competing bill from a Republican state senator.
Sen. John Burzichelli introduced a bill whose details were made public Tuesday calling for the state takeover law, officially called the Municipal Stabilization and Recovery Act, to be extended for another five years.
The 2016 law grants the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs authority over Atlantic City’s major decision-making power. It expires in December.
Burchizelli’s bill calls for the takeover to continue for half as long as would be the case under a bill to be introduced soon by Republican state Sen. Vince Polistina, who represents Atlantic County.
