First, the good news: New Jersey’s casinos, racetracks and their partners won more than $536 million in April, an increase of 5% from a year ago.
Now the bad news for Atlantic City: More than half of that came from people who didn’t set foot in the seaside resort.
That essential truth is becoming more and more relevant as New York State moves to soon add three casinos in or near New York City that could seriously cut into Atlantic City’s market.
And a pair of state lawmakers earlier this week introduced legislation that would ask voters again whether to permit casinos outside Atlantic City, with facilities proposed for the Meadowlands Racetrack in East Rutherford, just outside New York City, and at Monmouth Park in Oceanport, near the Jersey Shore in Monmouth County.
