A proposal being considered today by the Clark County Commission calls for holding short-term rental platforms like Airbnb and VRBO financially responsible for unlicensed properties listed on their sites — a move officials hope will close a longstanding enforcement gap.
The ordinance, introduced Aug. 4, would fine platforms $500 for a first violation involving an unlicensed listing and $1,000 for each violation after that. It marks the county’s latest attempt to rein in short-term rentals following years of contentious fights with property owners.
The issue tends to flare up around major events, like when the Las Vegas Grand Prix or a big concert draws crowds to town, and visitors often turn to short-term rentals scattered through neighborhoods outside the resort corridor in search of deals on lodging.
