As a casino project that’s been in the works for 15 years remains stalled, the Little River Band of Ottawa Indians is now looking to develop 170 acres of surrounding land in Fruitport Township.

The tribe has long wanted to build a nearly $200 million casino at the site of the defunct Great Lakes Downs racetrack, located off Harvey Street near E. Ellis Road. But it’s faced several roadblocks and the tribal leader says he’s been getting mixed messages about the future.

So while leaving the site of the planned casino open, the tribe is turning to the surrounding 170 acres for development.
