BetMGM to assume “key-employee” status for MGM’s Nevada sportsbooks

MGM Resorts International is turning over its racebook and sportsbook functions to BetMGM, the joint venture between MGM Resorts and Entain that operates across the country.

BetMGM attorney Scott Scherer said the joint venture will serve as a “key employee’’ for MGM Resorts International’s books. In other words, the company will provide executive-level management.

“The expectation is that BetMGM will have certain high-level functions, including trading, customer service, risk and fraud, marketing, and payments. As the employer, MGM be responsible for oversight and policy direction.

“BetMGM will have its own chain of command, but when issues arise, they’ll be resolved by the designated MGM Resorts executive.”

BetMGM’s mobile sports betting app went live in Las Vegas late last year. Before Nevada regulators signed off on the key-employee changeover, BetMGM executives had to explain how unauthorized out-of-state employees of an Entain subsidiary gained access to the Nevada version of the app, which was supposed to be siloed. The problem, related to bonus-bet adjustments that didn’t have a filter to exclude Nevada, was corrected months ago.

“Adjustments were made and there’s no more access,” Scherer said.

The new app has given Nevada players expanded pre-game, in-game, parlay, and deposit and withdrawal options. The Nevada app is also connected to BetMGM Rewards, so Nevada users now earn both BetMGM Rewards points and MGM Rewards tier credits.

Scherer said BetMGM will operate under MGM’s house rules for racebooks and sportsbooks.
