TRENTON, N.J. (AP) – Voters could soon learn if they’ll decide whether there should be two casinos in northern New Jersey.
The second of two required public hearings on a proposal to expand casino gambling beyond Atlantic City was held Monday in the state Legislature.
Backers say the new gambling halls just outside New York City can recapture millions of dollars that have left New Jersey for casinos in other states.
But opponents say the new casinos will destroy what’s left of Atlantic City in return for a short-term financial jolt.
All that remains for a statewide vote to be held in November is for a bill authorizing it to be approved by three-fifths majorities in both houses of the Legislature, something that could happen as early as next week.
