MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) – Lawmakers will cast votes on gambling and taxes in what is expected to be a contentious day at the Alabama Legislature.

Faced with a looming budget shortfall, the House of Representatives on Tuesday will debate a series of tax bills proposed by GOP legislators. The largest plank of the revenue plan is a 25 cents per pack cigarette tax increase.

Other bills include proposals to raise the title fee on automobiles from $15 to $25, and to raise the business privilege tax on large businesses.

A Senate committee will also hold a public hearing and vote on gambling legislation.

Senate President Pro Tem Del Marsh has proposed creating a state lottery and allowing casinos at four state dog tracks. Both lawmakers and voters would have to approve the idea.
