SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) – Authorities in Puerto Rico have charged 32 people with operating illegal gambling machines.
The island’s Justice Department said Tuesday that the charges were filed after a seven-month investigation that ended in December. Authorities previously confiscated 424 machines and seized nearly $44,000 in cash.
Officials have blamed illegal gambling machines for the closure of six casinos in recent years and causing some $6 million in losses. They estimated that some 45,000 machines still operate across the island.
