Real estate investment trust VICI Properties has donated a 58-acre site that once housed a Kentucky racetrack to the local community which will convert the land into a youth recreational sports complex.

In a brief statement Monday, the New York-based company said the land was formerly the site of Bluegrass Downs Racetrack in Paducah, Kentucky. The facility, which was operated by Caesars Entertainment, closed in October 2019.

McCracken County will take over the land and build soccer, baseball, and softball fields to benefit roughly 1,200 children in the local area.

“VICI is glad to be able to make this donation, which will directly benefit the communities in Paducah and McCracken County,” said VICI President John Payne. The transaction did not have an impact on any of the company’s lease agreements.

The racetrack closed when Caesars decided not to renew its Kentucky racing license.

“The location is perfect for our needs,” said Craig Clymer, McCracken County Judge-Executive. “For decades, kids have been playing soccer at the old landfill site. This gives us the opportunity to dramatically improve our situation. I wish to thank VICI for its generous contribution.”
