An overview of igaming revenue in New Jersey, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, West Virginia, Delaware, and Rhode Island, the seven states where online gambling is legal in the U.S.

National

Total igaming revenue for April 2023 in the seven states where it’s legal added up to $653.5 million compared to $475.7 million in April 2023, an increase of 27.2% year over year. (Rhode Island hadn’t reported at press time, so it’s April revenue is estimated.)

1. Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania icasinos produced $212.2 million in earnings in April. It was the third consecutive month of more than $200 million in internet-gambling win; only January came in under $200 million at $189.3 million. April fell below the Keystone State’s all-time record of $233 million set in March, but it now ranks as the second highest revenue month.

Total revenue from online slots was $164.8 million compared to $95.6 million in 2023, while online table games earned $45 million compared to last year’s $38.9 million. Online poker’s $2.4 million was down from $2.7 million in April 2023.

Hollywood Casino at Penn National continued to hold its top spot with a gross of $75.9 million, followed by Valley Forge at $59.8 million and Rivers Philadelphia at $37.7 million.

Pennsylvania collected $72.2 million in taxes from April’s win as compared to $58.3 million in taxes in April 2023 (19%).

2. Michigan

Michigan sustained a rare loss in online-gambling revenue month over month, down a little more than 10%, but its $192.9 million in gross revenue was a significant 21.4% more than the $143.4 million in April 2023.

Michigan’s 14 online-casino operators paid a total of $35.8 million in igaming taxes, with $9.8 million going to the city of Detroit, $4.3 million helping to support tribal organizations, and the other $21.7 million submitted to the state.

3. New Jersey

For the month of April 2024, the internet-gaming win in the Garden State was $187.9 million, reflecting growth of 16.1% when compared to the $158.9 million reported in April 2023.

New Jersey’s igaming revenue placed behind Michigan’s for the fourth month in a row.

The new normal in the icasino rankings was repeated in April, with Golden Nugget generating the most revenue at $53.1 million, 27.5% more than when it was a constant third-place also-ran a year ago at $41.6 million. Resorts Digital came in second at $47.5 million, nearly 14% more year over year, while Borgata/BetMGM, the long-time pack leader now reduced to third place every month, registered $44.1 million, down 2.2% from last year’s $41.7 million.

New Jersey collected its 15% igaming tax of $28.2 million compared to $23.7 million in April 2023.

4. Connecticut

Connecticut’s two online-casino operators earned $35 million, the lowest monthly total in 2024, though it was an increase of 38% over April 2023’s $25.5 million.

DraftKings accounted for $19.4 million, while FanDuel claimed the other $15.8 million. Together, they paid their 18% in taxes to the Constitution State in April, which came to $6.3 million as compared to $4.5 million year over year.

5. West Virginia

For the four-week reporting period in April, West Virginia internet casinos won $19.6 million, a 38% jump over April 2023’s $12.1 million, itself an increase of 33.9% over 2022’s $8 million. It was, however, the first monthly decrease in 2024, down 5.3% from the record $20.7 million in March.

6. Delaware

Delaware’s April igaming revenue came to $4.4 million compared to April 2023’s $1.3 million, another giant leap for BetRivers’s online casino after taking over for 888 in January.

Online video lottery (slot) games once again accounted for the lion’s share of income at $3.3 million compared to $1.1 million year on year, while table games earned $1.1 million compared to $195,118 under 888.

7. Rhode Island

At press time, Rhode Island also had yet to report the state’s single internet-casino’s win for its first full month in operation. Bally’s launched igaming in the Ocean State on March 6 and earned $1.2 million over the rest of the month. That brought March’s national total up from the $676.7 million in last month’s Report to $677.9 million. Extrapolating the win from last month’s partial result, we’re estimating $1.5 million. When the official number is reported, we’ll update.
